I’ve always used Ping’s guide for initial iron fitting. Wrist to floor and height. This really close. Don’t forget to use a shoe that you’ll be playing golf in. That may change the lie angle. And Mizuno measures from the line(s) below the top of the grip or that is where they cut the shaft from. So, they will be bit longer. 0.25 inches. At or in a 60 degree plane. And that too is changing! Clear as mud this golf stuff! 🙄

It's because masking tape (.008) is not the same thickness as double-sided tape (.015). You need to use paper backed buildup tape, not traditional masking tape. 2 layers of masking tape equals 1 layer of buildup tape.

I've always been told that slice is caused by the club face being open at impact and I understand how moving weight towards the heel can help square the club face at impact. But from what you're saying here, a slightly open club face will cause draw gear effect spin which seems a bit counter-intuituve. Am i understanding this correctly?

I’m a scratch golfer but haven’t bought new equipment in years until 2022. Tried a bunch, tried shafts, and ended up fitting in to a stock shaft. Didn’t know it at the time. It was Uinta Golf so not a Club Champion type fitter. But still nice to see that I performed just as well in a stock vs premium shaft. Nice to have no upcharge too lol😂. Great video!

AJ, does work the same with corded grips that are stiffer? Makes all kind of sense, the cords are only added to the "rubber"

Awesome video sir! You’ve given me something to think about. I’d be interested to know how much weight 10 layers of tape adds versus a how much is added by a midsize or even jumbo grip.

I read in a golf magazine article that using Windex works. The article did not include any specific directions. Anyone have experience with this? I've used Dawn and a nylon brush for many years whenever a grip starts to feel slick and have had good results, but I am curious about Windex.

Hi AJ! Nice content as usual. I've been following your tips and always with good results. I tried the Autoflex substitute using Aldila NVS 40g senior flex and never changed due to excellent results. Then, I tried the jumbomax grip and since the first swing I was so impressed that didn't change. Now, I removed all weights from my driver head. 167g with an unbelievable B8 swing weight. I thought it would be unplayable. But for my surprise at the driving range, I was hitting ball after ball almost dead straight. I have a typical club head speed of 88mph and BS of 125mph and average driving distance of 190 yds carry. My launch monitor, a garmin g80, could be not so precise, but with this incredible lighter combo, I'm averaging 92 mph CHS and 130 BS. On the golf course, it means 205 yds of carry and with some good roll, 220 yds. And best of all, it's a fairway finder! 12 fairways hit or more per round. Don't know why. I was once fitted for a regular shat flex 60g, D2 SW and my average was 180 yds and 60% fairway hit. Now, please, explain me what's that all about. Thanks

I personally don't try to use tape in order to increase grip size, however what I will do with tape is use extra layers on a semi-squishy grip, like the lambkin sonar, to get the grip to stretch out just a little bit and be tighter feeling

Something else to consider with more difficult grips. I just regripped all of my sons irons. After the tape and grip has solvent and been inserted onto the club, I used slight puffs of compressed air from a compressor. Slid right on in seconds be expanding the grip.

A basic fitting is free at my local retail golf shop. Last year I hit several model irons; determined the best head, shaft and grip; and paid MSRP (no extra charges). I guess I am not too particular, but the process was great.

Also brake cleaner on a rag will get rid of all the old residue leaving the shaft completely clean of everything left behind from old grip/tape.

I just regripped my clubs and by the fourth last one I found a trick. Slice the grip, don’t pull it off. Peel it off by rolling one end around the shaft. It pulls the tape off with it.

Adding layers of tape, as you said, does get the grip firmer which will usually get your average golfer to sqeeze harder on the grip through the swing : an absolute no-no. Grip are offered in a very wide size/fitness range ... One should get the right one off the shelf and benefit from the manufacturers knowledge and experience. Regards !

You will feel a difference under the lower hand though. That part of the grip is already thin so when it stretches and thins out it is not as noticeable. I put 3 extra wraps of tape that were about 3"-4" long down under the thinner part of the grip on one of my wedges just to see if it felt different and it is absolutely thicker. Also, like others have said this changes the swing weight and even though the club is overall getting heavier, the clubhead will start to feel significantly lighter.

Which one would be similar to p790? Cause I'm playing p790 (2017).... Time to change 😅

Some are using layers because of grip preferences and do not want to change swing weight. Most of the midsize grips have 10 to 14g more weight. How do you handle this?

Whooo...admittedly, I ain't very smert...but I'm having a difficult time wrapping my head around this! I comprehend each test on its own merit. What I'm not understanding is why you think bend profile is a more accurate stiffness measurement than frequency or deflection? I understand that for swing weight purposes...it may be more useful. But to make the claim that a shortened shaft is in ACTUALITY "softer" than the original length shaft flies in the face of physics! Just for the sake of argument. If you have a 40"-40 gram shaft. And you cut 1 gram worth from the stiffest end. Then added that 1 gram onto the clubhead (most flexible end)...would the frequency or deflection test show a softer or a stiffer flex than the original length shaft? My bet is on stiffer. If that's true...then the shaft is in ACTUALITY stiffer. of course...if you add a pound of lead to the clubhead it's going to feel softer! But that "feel" doesn't negate the fact that the shaft is ACTUALLY...in reality stiffer! Help AJ...what am I missing?

I have a gripping station and use the hooked knife to get the grip off. Its quicker BUT I think I will use the heat gun you have suggested which makes a whole lot of sense, first. So thanks for the tip. PS This is only half of the equation. You probably should have shown the viewers how to install the new grip too.

Been blowing on grips for a couple of years now and I've had slight slipping on various grips when using masking tape. I switched to clear packing tape and that grips the back side of the rubber way better. I thought of using hairspray when I switched to packing tape but it holds really well without it. I am going to try both next time I regriped just for fun.

i just need something to absorb the shock. my hand hurts so bad when i get a solid crush, should i add more tape, or just go with a thicker grip? i typicaly go for a midsize

Your experiment only makes sense u til a certain point. Case in point bubba and Tony finau use something like 13/14 extra wraps and I've held one of. Tony's clubs and there is definitely a big difference. It's not that you're spreading misinformation but, you're spreading misinformation 😂😂😅

What effect does the grip core size have? I would expect something similar… say .580 vs .600. What are your thoughts here?

I need your help it's about loft adjustability. Question. If lowering the loft on an adjustable wood changes how open or closed it is, would the opposite be true? Take a non adjustable club, and open or close the face the same degree, say 1.5 or 3, make small lines at the top of the grip to standardize the adjustment, making each club more versatile. Can you please tell me why it won't work, or do a video on why it does or does not.thank you. I'm only approaching you. I think you're the one who will follow up.

The 'myth' probably began back when the new, fancy rubber one-piece grips were introduced and there was only the one size available - standard. Prior to the one-piece grip, wrapped grips allowed you to have whatever size you wanted.

How bout either bending a club 3* upright or flat ( or more? or less?) thinking like a 7 or 8 iron to use as a training club for the purpose of training a more in to out club path?

I have been regripping for 30+ years and never told anyone that extra tape would make the grip larger If they want a midsize grip they buy a midsize grip. I don't fool around with several layers of tape
